Successor to the Maranello marque’s Berlinetta Boxer, the Ferrari Testarossa was a mid-engined 12-cylinder supercar that was first unleashed by the Prancing Horse in 1984. With nearly 10,000 units built in total, the Testarossa stands as one of the least rare and most mass-produced models the Italian firm has ever made. And while we probably wouldn’t describe the regular version of the car as “rare,” we wouldn’t say the same about the special variant that Ferrari used to give the model range its final sendoff, the F512 Modificata — one of which is due to cross the auction block in the coming weeks. 

Italian for “Modified,” the Modificata-spec F512 represented the final version of the famed ‘80s exotic, as well as the last Ferrari to be kicked along by one of the brand’s horizontally-opposed 12-cylinder engines. Widely considered to be the most desirable model in the series, the Modificata featured new up-specced Bosch ABS, an updated suspension setup, an improved chassis design, and a near perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Changes to the exterior of the car included a unique set of taillights, three-piece alloy Speedline wheels, and an all-new front fascia design with race-inspired fixed headlights that borrowed style cues from both the F40 and 512 BB/LM. Decked out in a unique trim package, the interior of the car also received a few minor tweaks such as an updated steering wheel design and adjustable aluminum pedals.

Ferrari sent its final flat-12 out with a bang, too, bestowing the dozen-cylinder mill with a new stainless exhaust, increased compression, and a host of other lightened internals that collectively resulted in an output of 440hp — a gain of 55hp over the standard Testarossa. Unlike the vast majority of F512 M specimens which wore Ferrari’s trademark Rosso Corsa, black, or yellow paint, this particular example comes decked out in a Canna di Fucile Metallizzato livery — of which only 10 were made and only two were paired with a Beige and Castoro interior. One of only 501 F512 Ms ever made, this particular F512M example is also the 16th of only 75 examples that were earmarked for US shores.

Benefitting from a major recent servicing and sporting less than 14,150 miles on the odo, this Canna di Fucile Metallizzatof-finished 1995 Ferrari F512 Modificata is slated to cross the auction block later this month on January 26th at RM Sotheby’s upcoming Phoenix, Arizona sale where it’s expected to fetch between $625,000 and $700,000.
